Embedding
Internationalisation
in Higher
Education
Institutions
The EMBINT project aims to integrate internationalisation across higher education institutions by involving diverse staff functions, beyond traditional stakeholders. Through research, surveys, and focus groups, it will develop relevant tools including an applicable framework for self-assessment and a modular action plan. These resources will empower professional services staff to actively engage in internationalisation, while fostering inclusivity and making these efforts a shared institutional responsibility.
Self-Assessment Tool
A customisable and structured Self-Assessment Tool will be developed, which will enable institutions to evaluate the current state of internationalisation among professional services staff, including recognition of demographic or role-based gaps and existing barriers, and identifying incentives to encourage a wider array of staff to engage with internationalisation practices. By assessing institutional strengths and staff needs, the tool will help institutions to shape the Modular Action Plan to their specific needs.
Modular Action Plan
EMBINT’s core output will be the development of a discerning yet flexible and scalable Modular Action Plan, which can be adopted by managers and senior leaders to integrate internationalisation across all levels of their institution, while incentivising and sharing mobility opportunities more broadly among staff. This will contain at least 20 modules with pre-defined learning outcomes, which can be applied depending on the needs of each department based on the outcomes of their initial self-assessment.
Webinars for Departments within Institutions
Towards the end of the project, three live online webinars will be held, covering EMBINT’s output and the importance of a multi-lateral approach to internationalisation. These webinars will encourage and train staff in various departments to implement and integrate the Self-Assessment Tool and Modular Action Plan as part of their internationalisation efforts. Colleagues from specialised functions such as HR, Finance, IT, HR, and Support Services will be invited to learn how to embed internationalisation in their respective departments. These webinars will be recorded and hosted on EMBINT’s website as a resource for staff to revisit or share the trainings more widely.
About
Embedding Internationalisation in Higher Education Institutions (EMBINT) is an Erasmus+ project working to make internationalisation accessible and beneficial within the university sector, and not something reserved for a small group of specialists or departments.
Too often, international opportunities in universities are limited to academic staff, international offices, or senior leadership. This leaves many professional services staff and support teams excluded from global engagement, mobility, and international collaboration. EMBINT aims to change this by opening up internationalisation to a wider range of staff roles, creating new ways for people across institutions to take part in and benefit from international experiences.
By working directly with staff across partner universities and wider University Alliance networks, EMBINT is building practical, inclusive structures that make internationalisation both a shared responsibility and a shared benefit. The project will develop a flexible Internationalisation Action Plan, supported by a Self-Assessment Tool and clear implementation guidelines. These will be tested through a year-long pilot phase across partner universities to ensure they are realistic, useful, and sustainable in the long term.
EMBINT’s vision is simple: internationalisation should not be a one-off experience or a privilege for a select few. It should be part of how universities work, grow, and connect with the world, for all staff.
