Discussion with Students on International Exchanges within the Framework of the Erasmus+ REX Project

October 30, 2025

The Faculty of Tourism at the University of Maribor is coordinating the Erasmus+ project REX – Reimagining the Erasmus Experience. The project is led by Assist. Prof. Dr. Vita Petek, with Prof. Dr. Jasna Potočnik Topler serving as a project collaborator. As part of the project, discussions were organised with students focusing on encouraging mobility, inclusion, and the participation of young people in international study exchanges.

The purpose of the meeting, held at the Faculty of Tourism in Brežice, was to explore how students perceive studying abroad, what motivates them to participate in exchanges, what holds them back, and what could further encourage them to undertake an exchange experience. In an open and relaxed setting, students who had already participated in exchanges shared their positive experiences, highlighting the acquisition of intercultural competencies, the improvement of language skills, and personal growth. They also emphasised the importance of faculty support in organising exchanges, recognising study obligations, and the role of mentors who assist in preparing for departure. Among students who have not yet participated in an exchange, fear of the unknown, financial challenges, lack of information, and difficulty coordinating domestic commitments were the main obstacles.

For exchanges to increase interest, students suggested more personal testimonials from former participants, better information about financial opportunities, simplified administrative procedures, and stronger promotion of exchange programmes within regular study activities. The discussion revealed that students are curious, open-minded, and willing to take on new challenges, but they need more practical information and support when preparing for an international experience. By participating in such events, the Erasmus+ REX project helps students better understand their needs and develop strategies that will enable them to take the next step toward studying or undertaking practical training abroad, thereby enhancing both their academic and personal growth.
