The project in a nutshell
Studying abroad can be life-changing, but also mentally demanding. The Mobile Minds in Motion project strives to provide students on mobility and staff with research-backed tools, resources and support networks needed to ensure that the Erasmus experience remains a rewarding and healthy experience.

The Mobile Minds in Motion (MMM) project acknowledges that while studying abroad through the Erasmus+ programme is often celebrated as a life-changing experience, it can also bring significant mental health challenges. Many students face cultural shock, homesickness, academic pressure, and feelings of loneliness or anxiety. These issues are often overlooked, leaving a critical gap in support systems for mobile students. Alarmingly, recent studies, including findings from Zimmermann et al. (2024), Campbell et al. (2022), and the 2022 Health at a Glance report, reveal that nearly half of young Europeans report unmet mental health needs, with the pandemic further exacerbating these challenges.
MMM envisions a healthier and more inclusive mobility experience by fostering mental health prevention and awareness. We aim to provide students and staff with the tools and knowledge to prepare for and address mental health challenges tied to the unique experiences of studying abroad. By promoting open dialogue and destigmatising mental health issues, the project aspires to create a supportive environment for all Erasmus+ participants.
MMM focuses on three primary goals:
- Raise awareness: Break the stigma surrounding mental health challenges faced by mobile students, fostering open conversations.
- Develop prevention strategies: Create tailored tools and materials to help students navigate the emotional and psychological demands of studying abroad.
- Provide lasting resources: Equip students and staff with practical, sustainable resources, such as a self-assessment tool for students and comprehensive guides for International Relations Officers (IROs) and counselors.
To achieve these goals, MMM engages in a range of activities:
- Research and mapping: Conduct surveys and focus groups to explore the mental health experiences of mobile students, identifying preventive strategies.
- Resource development: Create educational materials and a self-assessment tool designed to prepare students for potential challenges and assist staff in supporting them effectively.
- Pilot testing: Test the resources through webinars and workshops to ensure their practicality and effectiveness.
- Awareness campaigns: Organize webinars, national events, and online campaigns to disseminate findings and foster a community committed to mental health awareness.
- Building an online community: Establish a sustainable platform where students and stakeholders can share experiences, access support, and continue the conversation on mental health.

Understanding mental health challenges
Studying abroad is transformative, but it also comes with emotional hurdles.
Many Erasmus students face stress, anxiety, and cultural adaptation difficulties, which can affect their academic success and overall well-being.
We will conduct surveys and focus groups to map the mental health challenges experienced by mobile students. This research will provide crucial insights into the psychological impact of studying abroad, helping institutions and support services develop targeted interventions. The findings will shape resources, recommendations, and tailored support strategies for each phase of the mobility experience.

Promoting mental health prevention
Preparation is key to a smooth and resilient mobility experience.
Raising awareness, fostering peer support, and providing mental health education can equip students with the tools to navigate the challenges of studying abroad.
We will develop educational materials and awareness campaigns to help students proactively manage their mental well-being. Through webinars, workshops, and digital outreach, we will offer practical guidance on stress management, coping strategies, and resilience-building, ensuring students feel supported before, during, and after their mobility.

Empowering students with self-assessment
Understanding one’s own mental well-being is the first step to seeking support.
A dedicated self-assessment tool will help students evaluate their emotional state and identify potential challenges throughout their mobility journey.
We will create an interactive digital self-assessment tool, enabling students to check in on their mental health at key moments before and during their mobility. The tool will provide personalised guidance, resources, and recommendations, while also linking students to institutional or community-based mental health support when needed.
